If he was out to be malicious to anyone, it wouldn't have made sense for him to appear in many of the situations he did. The promos best displayed the character that only Marty Wright can play. He took a legendary, haunting figure and kept the intimidation factor, but he added a tone of voyeurism and comedy with his antics. He would smash a clock on his head—even eat worms in his entrance. And he did so willingly. Wright explained he only ate the worms because WWE wouldn't let him have any other insect as part of the gimmick.
He said because arenas were afraid of something getting lose, the WWE only let him use worms every week. Wright laughed about the faces he could get people in WWE to make when they saw the character. He said many times he was able to get stunned facial reactions of disbelief from Vince McMahon based on what Wright would do or eat in the effort of getting the character over.
Vince also gave me the opportunity to have character license. He just let the character take off. You never know when The Boogeyman is going to pop up again, but I'm definitely working toward that. Most would have called it a day there and packed their bags and gone home. But Wright carried on working, and earned himself an invite to train with the WWE. He went to OVW to train to become a wrestler. This is where he would develop his famous Boogeyman character. After just six months of training, he made his debut for Ohio Valley Wrestling.
He interrupted a tag team match, attacking all 4 competitors. He no sold all of the wrestlers offence, before beating them down even further. His look differed to his appearances on the main roster, with his red face paint substituted for a pair of black horns protruding from his head.
It gave us the first glimpse of who is the Boogeyman in WWE. In July , vignettes began airing on Monday Night Raw hyping the debut of this terrifying Boogeyman. The vignettes were in the style of a horror movie, slowly moving in toward a door before revealing the grinning face of the Boogeyman. However, it did show us he was someone to be terrified of. These vignettes continued for weeks, but were eventually shuffled over to Smackdown where the Boogeyman would eventually debut.
He suffered hyper-extended knees whilst they were airing, which delayed his debut until October that year. He debuted on October that year, and faced off in a series of squash matches, and entered into a feud with JBL moving into JBL tried his best to put over the demonic Boogeyman, but the feud they had together was terrible. In one segment on Smackdown, something horrible disgusting happened.
Jillian as part of her character had a giant, disgusting growth on her face. The Boogeyman made his entrance as he always did, crawling menacingly toward the ring with worms in his mouth. He scared JBL out of the ring, and with one disgusting bite, tore the growth from the face of Jillian Hall. Despite this horrendous piece of television, the match that followed it did not impress. JBL did his best to make the inexperienced Boogeyman look good, and fell to his pumphandle slam after a poor 2 minute contest.
Later in the night, Rey Mysterio won the Royal Rumble match, overshadowing the debut pay-per-view bout of the monstrous superstar. Boogeyman had the passion but he was injury prone and never really caught on in the ring. But that's not the whole story for Boogeyman because he re-signed with WWE under a legends contract in Now Boogeyman can pop up at anytime WWE sees fit, which is always an extremely comfortable thought to keep in the back of your mind.
